Nicholas Stephen Mihos was a quiet, conserved young man who, when it came to the people he loved, he opened his heart. He threw himself into activities and enjoyed sports to the fullest. He had a big heart and a huge smile that demonstrated his deep love for family and friends.

Nick was born at a time when technology and economic means allowed Americans to enjoy video games, camcorders, and aerobic exercise. Parents like Robert and Denise (Moyski) Mihos of Ortonville, Michigan were balancing strong values with wide-ranging opportunities. When their first child of Polish and Greek descent was born on October 12, 1982, they brought Nicholas Stephen for baptism to St. Anne's Catholic Church, in Ortonville with Monsignor Mike LeFevre officiating. They raised their family of three boys in the Catholic faith. Nick's brother Nathan was two years younger than he and Noah was born eight years later. Nick enjoyed living in their log home, and his years at HT Burt Elementary School and was saddened to leave Ortonville when the family moved to the Cincinnati area. Nick went to Morrow Elementary in Morrow, Ohio at age 9, but already at age 5 he got his start in team sports. He played baseball and took part in many after school activities, including playing the saxophone for four years. He was interested in all sports and would stay active as a player and fan throughout his life.

After three years in Morrow, the family moved to Holland, Michigan where Nick attended West Ottawa Middle School. Always eager to be active in sports, Nick not only ran track and played football, he got his start in hockey and was hooked! By the time he got to Grand Rapids Catholic Central High School, Nick was playing enough hockey to make the team each of his four years. One of his favorite memories is the goal he scored against Kentwood and the last goal of his career assisted by his brother Nate. Nick was proud to wear the Cougar uniform and represent the school he loved. But he was even more proud to graduate from Catholic Central. He attended Ferris State University, where he studied surveying for a semester.

Because of his interest and involvement in sports, Nick also thoroughly enjoyed watching sports and rooting for his Detroit teams. He loved to watch the Red Wings, yet every Detroit team could claim Nick as a fan. He was thrilled to see the Pistons and Tigers excel to championship status. Just this summer, Nick treated his brothers to a trip back to Detroit to see Justin Verlander pitch. As for the Detroit Lions? Nick was still waiting for them to "shock the world", but he remained a true fan by watching them every season. Nick the Fan collected sports memorabilia of hats and jerseys. He numbered them among his favorite possessions of CDs and comic books. He also enjoyed seeing his brother Noah score a goal for the West Ottawa Varsity Hockey team.

Nick worked as a furniture installer at Johnson Controls for GTI Services. He gained a reputation as a reliable employee because he was mature, dependable, and hard working. Nick also knew how to have fun and be fun. He played video games, enjoyed super heroes and cooking, especially his "Cincinnati Chili" recipe, watched horror movies and TV crime shows, listened to Rap, Hip Hop, Rock-n-Roll, and flashed his special "Nick Smile" to the people he loved. When he was little, that smile was sometimes turned into a funny face that Nick flashed when he mugged before a camera. Nick was a real "ham" who amused his family, most recently with his "ever changing dark facial hair."

Nick truly loved his family and friends and the time he spent just hanging out with them. He took trips to Florida to "hang out" with his grandparents, especially enjoying time with his grandpas. Nick celebrated his family and the times they gathered to celebrate Wigilia. Family and faith were important to Nick. He attended Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, which becomes the family's support in time of deepest need.

Nicholas Stephen Mihos, age 24, of Holland, died Friday, December 8, 2006, at his home. Surviving are his parents, Robert and Denise Mihos, of Holland; Brothers, Nathan Mihos, and Noah Mihos; Grandparents, Dolores Mihos, and Jane Moyski, both of Holland. He is also survived by several aunts, uncles, and cousins. Funeral services are scheduled for Tuesday, 4:00PM, at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Phillip Nguyen. Visitation is scheduled for Monday, from 6-9PM, at Our Lady of the Lake, and from 2:00PM until the time of the Mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday at the church. Arrangements are by the Northwood Chapel, Dykstra Life Story Funeral Homes, 295 Douglas Avenue, Holland.
