Charles, Edwin P. Mattawan Passed away Friday morning, January 23, 2015. Ed was born April 18, 1935 in Port Huron, MI the son of Albert and Margaret (Gorham) Charles. He was a veteran serving in the U.S. Army where he earned the G.I. bill to graduate from Oakland University. He worked as a social worker in St. Clair County and then a director in Van Buren County for the Department of Social Services. After 33 years of service Ed retired and continued a devoted life for the underprivileged through various human services agencies including St. Vincent of DePaul in Mattawan. Ed enjoyed sports, movies, and the outdoors; but mostly enjoyed being with his family and all people. His personality and laughter will always be cherished by all who knew him. On May 22, 1960 he was united in marriage to his loving wife, the former Mary Gleason, who survives. Also surviving are his sons, Brian Charles, Kevin Charles, Doug (Ann) Charles; 6 grand-daughters, Ashley, Rachael, Casey, Kelley, Nicole, and Kylie; brothers and sisters, Keith (Judy) Charles, Mick (Delta) Charles, Christina (Gary) Rutowski, Robin Charles; and several nieces and nephews. Ed was preceded in death by his parents; brothers and sister, Thomas, Kenneth, and Darlene; and a daughter-in-law, Lisa. A service to celebrate Ed's life will be held at 11:00am Monday, January 26 at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 South 9th Street. Friends may meet the family Sunday (today) January 25, from 2-4 and 5-7pm at the Westside Chapel. Private interment will be held in Almena Cemetery.
