Evert J. VerHage, age 88, of Kalamazoo, MI passed away Wednesday evening, January 21, 2015 at Borgess Medical Center. He was born on June 12, 1926 in Kalamazoo, the son of the late Evert and Alice (Bouwhuis) VerHage. Evert was a veteran of the United States Navy serving during World War II. On October 24, 1945, he was united in marriage to Tina L. Triestram in Kalamazoo. For over 35 years, he was employed by The Upjohn Co. until his retirement in 1986. Evert was a member of Bethany Reformed Church, where he was a former deacon and elder for many years and also taught Sunday school. He also volunteered for Loaves & Fishes Food Pantry. Surviving are two children, Margie (Peter) Candela of Kalamazoo and Carol (Kenneth) Fricke of Portage; six grandchildren, Laura (William) Maury II, John Jr (Jennifer) Kalleward, William (Dianna) Kalleward, Holly (Ron) Armstrong, Robert (Tina) Kalleward, and Amy (Rob) Colwell; and sixteen great-grandchildren, William, Courtnie, Chelsea, Sam, Phillip, Christopher, Emily, William III, Jenna, Allison, Samantha, Austin, Aidan, Robby, Jackson and Lucas; four great-great-grandchildren, Summer, Rain, Benjamin and Charlotte; sister, Delores Slunick and several nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his wife of 60 years, Tina VerHage in 2006; two brothers, Jacob and Roger VerHage; two sisters, Winifred Chandler and Eleanor VanderPol and special cousin, Wilma VerHage. Funeral services for Mr. VerHage will be at 11:00 AM on Monday, Jan. 26, at Bethany Reformed Church, 1833 S. Burdick Street, with Rev. Fritz Kruithoff and Rev. Isaac VerHage officiating. Interment will follow the church luncheon in Mt. Ever-Rest Memorial Park. Friends may visit with the family from 2-5 PM on Sunday, Jan. 25, at Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 622 S. Burdick Street. As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be directed to Bethany Reformed Church or a charity of one's choice.
