Taken from her loved ones much too soon, Rebecca “Becky” Burger had a contagious zest for life that spread to all who were near. She was a free spirited adventurer who was game to try anything, at least one time anyway. When Becky loved, she loved with all her heart, and her devotion to her family and friends was unmatched. Thoughtful, kind, and intentional in the way she treated others, she was ever mindful of the way she lived her life each day. Becky’s warm smile, selfless acts of service, and unconditional love will be forever missed while her loved ones treasure her memory.

The 1970s were a decade to remember filled with numerous noteworthy events. This was the decade that saw the end of the Vietnam War and the resignation of President Richard Nixon while the Cold War escalated between the East and the West. The cultural fabric was colored with musical groups like The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, and Aerosmith while The Brady Bunch and The Dukes of Hazzard entertained us in our living rooms. It was just as this decade was drawing to a close that a young family from Indianapolis, Indiana, was filled with great anticipation as they awaited the birth of their new baby. The big day finally arrived on July 20, 1979, when the baby girl they named Rebecca Lynn made her grand entrance at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis via cesarean section. She was the younger of two girls born to her parents, Harry and Glenna (Harp) Burger, and she was joined in her family by her sister, Rachel, who was two years and two weeks older.

After a few years, the Burger family moved from Indianapolis to Mooresville where Becky remained for the majority of her life. She was in grade school at the time, and she adapted to her new environment without missing a beat. Becky attended school at Northwood Elementary during her youngest years. She was a tomboy who enjoyed playing outside and was content to follow her older sister around. Becky liked country music and had a special place in her heart for all animals, but she especially loved cats. Life was always a bustle of activity in their home including the time that Rachel decided to give Becky a haircut. Not surprisingly, it didn’t go all that well. The two girls were inseparable and never knew life without each other. Becky went on to graduate from Mooresville High School in 1998.

Throughout her life Becky was one to keep busy. For the past ten years she was employed in the cafeteria at the Putnam County Hospital. Although she loved animals too much and would never hunt, Becky did enjoy going out shooting. Becky enjoyed holidays, but her favorite was Halloween, and she also like spending time at McCormick’s Creek State Park. For years Becky was a member of Life Line Baptist Church. Since she had a bit of a daredevil in her, she had recently decided that she would like to try skydiving, but this was something that was not able to come to fruition.

Although she enjoyed pursuing her interests and dreams, there was nothing that was of greater value to Becky than being surrounded by her loved ones. She deeply loved her parents and her sister, and she spent the past few years rooming with her lifelong friend, Don Paskett. Through her we are reminded of the importance to never leave without telling a loved one how much you truly love one another as this was something she made certain to do every time. However, when it came to Gary, Becky’s terms of endearment meant a punch in the arm! In addition to the people in her life, Becky was extremely loyal to her beloved cats, Boo, Max, Jake, and Lucy.

With what should have been decades ahead of her, Becky was tragically involved in a serious automobile accident on Monday, December 15th that left her fighting for her life. After three long days of a courageous fight, Becky was unable to overcome the extent of her injuries.

A blessing in the lives of everyone around her, Rebecca “Becky” Burger was an extraordinary woman to know and love. As her family and friends can attest, she was a genuine redhead who was known to be stubborn at times, yet it was only when she was passionate about something. Becky lived each day to the fullest and surrounded herself with the people and things that meant the most. It is true that she always had to have the last word, even if it was just “whatever,” but her special spunk was one of the things that made her so easy to love. She will never be forgotten.

Rebecca Lynn “Becky” Burger, of Spencer and formerly of Mooresville, died on December 18, 2014. Becky’s family includes her parents, Harry and Glenna (Harp) Burger; sister, Rachel (Gary, Jr.) Padgett; nieces, Katlyn (Tim) Long and Brianna Padgett; lifelong friend, Don Paskett. Friends and family will gather on Sunday, December 21, 2014, 1 to 5 p.m. in the chapel at Carlisle – Branson Funeral Service & Crematory, Mooresville. Pastor Lyman Taylor will officiate the 10 a.m. funeral service on Monday, December 22, 2014, at the funeral home. Burial will be in Washington Park North Cemetery, Indianapolis.
