To Patricia Rowe, what mattered most was simple as there were only two things - her faith and her family. She saw some of the most beautiful places the world has to offer and enriched her life in countless ways, but her greatest source of pride and joy was found in witnessing her family tree blossom to include the children and grandchildren she adored. Pat had a warm and approachable demeanor that stemmed out of a genuine interest in others that drew people near with ease. Blessed with a sharp mind until the very end, she was so much fun to be around. Pat will be deeply missed while the memories she leaves behind remain a lasting treasure in the hearts and lives of her friends and loved ones for years to come.

The 1920s were some of the most exciting days we have experienced as a nation as innovation was transforming the way we lived our daily lives with things like refrigerators, washing machines, and radios that brought us our news, sports, and entertainment. Prosperity touched countless families who worked hard and played hard, too. Amidst this exciting time was the year 1924 that was filled with some excitement for a young couple from Kalamazoo, Michigan, as well as they were pleased to announce the birth of their baby girl on July 5th. Patricia A. was the younger of two girls born to her parents, Charles and Willious (Milham) Raseman, and she was raised in the family home alongside her sister, Ruth, who was a few years older than Patricia. As a family the Raseman’s made countless memories at their cottage on Gull Lake where they spent their summers. Back home Pat attended Harding Elementary, Vine Jr. High, and went on to graduate from Kalamazoo Central High School in 1942.

From there Pat continued her education. She first attended Kalamazoo College for two years, and then spent two years at University of Michigan where she also was a member of the sorority, Tri-Delta. In fact, Pat served as their treasurer until more recent years.

Not to be forgotten during Pat’s years in high school was her introduction to the young man with whom she would share the best years of her life. His name was Keith Rowe, and they were classmates who dated in high school. Their relationship continued, but their situation became a bit more challenging when he was drafted into the Army and was called overseas. Their love deepened, however, and on October 15, 1955, Pat and Keith exchanged their vows at St. Augustine. The newlyweds then headed off on their honeymoon to Chicago. Together they were blessed with the births of four children: Tom in 1958, Julie in 1960, Mark in 1962, and Sara in 1971.

In addition to raising their children, Patricia also worked outside of the home for a company she loved. She spent 35 years working at Upjohn - first in the international legal department for 10 years and then for 25 years in the engineering division.

In her leisure time Patricia was a woman of many interests. She loved cooking and baking, and her mother was a great teacher who taught Patricia a few tricks. As someone with a sweet tooth she loved desserts of all kinds. Patricia was very social and loved being with her family and friends. Over the years she was part of the U of M Club, the Kalamazoo Art Institute, and also frequented the Civic Theater. both with her husband and then with her daughters after his death. Pat played bridge and was involved in many bridge groups, loved going shopping and traveling including trips up North, a Caribbean cruise, and traveling around Europe after Keith died. She loved spending holidays with her family and was a fantastic hostess who always had a table that was beautifully decorated with one of her many table cloths and special china including table wear that was only used for the holidays. A woman of faith, Pat was a longtime member of St. Joseph Church. She kept busy with things that kept her thinking as it was important to her to keep growing and challenging her mind with things like crosswords, Sudoko, and reading both mysteries and romance novels.

Throughout her life what made Pat’s experiences even better was that many of them were shared with others. She always made a big celebration for her family when it was their birthday as she made the whole day centered around the birthday person. Once grandchildren arrived Pat was over the moon excited, and she loved spending time with them. Over the years she faithfully attended their events and activities. Pat loved eating out and often celebrated birthdays at Bill Knapp’s.

With a contagious smile, infectious laughter, and unending love for life, Patricia Rowe was a blessing to all who were within her reach. She was always well dressed and took great pride in her appearance, too. Completely devoted to her family, Pat treasured each and every one of her children and grandchildren. Her timeless legacy will be proudly carried on by those who follow in her footsteps.

Patricia A. Rowe died October 30, 2014, in Kalamazoo. Members of Pat’s family include her daughter, Julie (Kevin) Boersen and 4 grandchildren: Tyler Boersen, Megan Boersen, Paul Dykstra Jr. and Jack Dykstra. Pat was preceded in death by her husband, Keith Rowe; 3 children: Thomas Rowe, Mark Rowe, and Sara Rowe-Dykstra; and sister, Ruth Louise Eldridge.
