Barbara Fowler Maddox, age 89, of Three Rivers passed away on Monday, October 13, 2014. Barbara was born on June 25, 1925 and raised in Chicago Illinois. She attended DePauw University where she was a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority. Barbara came to live in Three Rivers Michigan in 1965. She began teaching third grade, first at Ruth Hoppin School and later Lake Section grade school, where her love for Corey Lake was enhanced by a summer home for a number of years. Her wonderful companion pets, cocker spaniel dogs and numerous cats endeared her to the Animal Rescue Fund (ARF). She was a faithful member of the Three Rivers' Woman's Club since 1985. Her enjoyment of the Arts was supported by her membership in the Kalamazoo Institute for the Arts and establishing the Martin Maddox yearly award for "Imaginative Realism". The Carnegie Center for the Arts was a favorite home town destination and she enjoyed the renovation and dedication the Three Rivers' Woman's Club pursued on behalf of the Carnegie Center. Her friendships were many and emanated from enthusiasm for the community of which she had numerous friends and cousins and research through St. Joseph County Historical Society, the local Scidmore Park, and Zoo grounds. She attended the Unitarian Universalist Community Church of Portage. Barbara was known for her great love for her three sons, Martin, Scott, and Brent. Barbara will long be remembered for her keen wit and wonderful sense of humor by those who were fortunate to have shared her life journey. She was preceded in death by her parents, and two sons', Martin and Brent. She is survived by her son Scott, several cousins and dear friends. A celebration of Barbara's life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 18, 2014 at the Carnegie Center of Three Rivers, 107 N. Main St, Three Rivers, MI 49093. Memorials may be directed to ARF, Carnegie Center for the Arts, Kalamazoo Institute for the Arts, Three Rivers Hospice, or the Unitarian Universalist Community Church of Portage in her memory. Envelopes also available at Hohner Funeral Home in care of arrangements.
