John Truss was a fun-loving, good-hearted man. He sported a happy-go-lucky attitude about life, but he was very serious about making matters better for those who struggled. John had a generous spirit and his actions reflected the same.

John was born October 5, 1935 in Detroit, Michigan during the Great Depression, when families were struggling to survive yet managed to advance the nation by their resilient spirit and hopeful outlook.

The Andrew and Blanche Truss family welcomed John as their sixth child and sibling to Shirley, Gloria, Betty Jean, Denzel and Maley “Bob.” Growing up in the automobile capital of the world, it was understandable that John liked cars and motorcycles, and he eventually spent his career as a fitter for control panels for the auto industry.

John’s own family life began when he met Ruth and the two were married on August 16, 1957. They honeymooned in the lovely town of Beulah in northern Michigan and settled into life that brought them two wonderful sons: John Jr. and Robert.

As a family, the Trusses liked to gather together for Thanksgiving and spend Christmas with extended family. They vacationed in Florida and California and when they had the opportunity they would visit there time-share in Hawaii. John liked going to the beach, on casino trips and dropping in for many a 2-for-1 Happy Hour. However, the most unforgettable outings were the ones John had with his sons—he often took them out of school to go fishing.

Having been a baseball fan in childhood, John always watched the Tigers, and being a Detroiter, he was loyal to the Lions despite their record. Out of necessity, he expanded his interests to any and all football and baseball games when he and Ruth moved permanently to Ft. Myers, Florida in 1989.

Regardless of where he lived, it was possible for John to contribute to numerous charities. He donated financially to such agencies as Wounded Warriors and offered time and energy at Thanksgiving and Christmas to provide a food for people who were struggling. In truth, John’s life was enriched by those who lived in poverty, and that made all the difference.

John Truss, age 79 passed away on Sunday, October 12, 2014. Loving husband of Ruth for 57 years. Beloved father John Jr. and Robert. Cherished grandfather of John and Maria Marie. Dear brother of Gloria Bernie and Maley “Bob”. Preceded in death by sisters Shirley and Betty Jean and brother Denzel. Family will receive friends at our Neely-Turowski Life Story Funeral Home 30200 Five Mile (between Merriman and Middle Belt) Friday 2-9pm with a funeral service Saturday 11am at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to Hope Hospice: hopehcs.org/donate Interment Roseland Park Cemetery.
