A vibrant, fun-loving, and passionate man, Agustin Arreola was someone who took every moment he was given and made the most of it. He was a stranger to none and a friend to all with a contagious zest for life that was fully apparent to all who were near. Agustin was blessed to share nearly 45 years with his true love with whom he witnessed his family tree blossom to include the grandchildren who were his greatest source of pride and joy. An evangelist through and through, he loved nothing more than sharing with others the reason for the joy in his heart. A dear man to many, Agustin will be deeply missed while his memory will remain forever near and dear to the hearts of all who were blessed to know and love him.

During the first half of the 1940s the eyes of the nation were focused overseas as countless young men and women were deeply entrenched in the throes of WWII. Great celebration erupted in 1945 when the war finally ended on September 2nd. There was dancing in the streets in cities all across our great land as our troops were finally coming home! This same year was a year to remember in the lives of a bustling young family from Edcouch, Texas, as they were pleased to welcome a healthy baby boy into the fold on September 24th. Agustin was the fifth child of ten and first son born to his parents, Ignacio and Florinda (Prado) Arreola, and he was raised in the family home alongside his older siblings, Angie, Ofelia, Eva, and Amparo, and his younger siblings, Rosie, Joe, Noemi, Ana, and JR. His father was a minister while his mother had more than enough to keep her busy at home. As a young boy growing up Agustin was known to run by the window and steal the freshly made tortillas that were cooling.

As a young man Agustin was ready to take on the world. He joined the United States Army and served as a medic in Vietnam. After his military duties were fulfilled, Agustin graduated from the Delton adult education program.

New and exciting changes were in store for Agustin when he met the young woman with whom he would write a love story that would span 44 years. Her name was Estella, and they met through youth activities in the church. Being a part of a large family their dates were always chaperoned because family was very important to him. Agustin and Estella became husband and wife on October 24, 1969. Soon after their marriage the couple was thrilled to learn they were expecting, and together they welcomed two daughters into their hearts and home, Gloria and Irma. As an animal lover who particularly loved dogs there were always dogs around, and at one point they even had cows.

Throughout his life Agustin was one to work hard. He spent some time working at Murco Meat Packing Company and later moved to Erie, Pennsylvania, to work for Vandekamp Foods. From there Agustin and his family moved to Holland, Michigan, where he served as a pastor of Victory Tabernacle. For several years they wintered in South Texas where Agustin also pastored. He later moved to Orangeville where he retired.

As his family and friends can attest, Agustin was always on the go. He often combined his love for being with family with his passion for ministering as he traveled to Texas and California to visit family and to minister. Agustin was so easy to listen to as he was warm, approachable, and always had a smile. In fact, it has been said that he was so social that he could walk out of Meijer knowing 10 more people than when he walked in! Agustin loved all things outdoors as he loved hunting, and riding both quad runners and boats. He never really met a food he didn’t like, especially if it was on the grill, barbecue, or Mexican. Agustin listened to both Tex-Mex and country gospel music.

There was nothing that Agustin treasured more than becoming a grandfather. He loved having his grandkids over, and his grandchildren looked forward to spending two months with him during the summers when there was plenty of boating and playing around outdoors. Agustin even made up a theme song for his grandchildren called “Grandpa had a Farm.” He had a dream of one day building a church campground to enjoy with his church family and family, and although that dream did not yet come to fruition it remained at the forefront of his mind.

Through the life he lived each day, Agustin Arreola exemplified what it means to be the hands and feet of the Lord he loved first and foremost. He was an evangelist at heart as he lived to bring others to Christ. Agustin was generous and giving as there was nothing he wouldn’t do for others. He will never be forgotten.

Agustin Arreola, of Orangeville, died on August 28, 2014. Agustin’s family includes his wife, Estella; children: Gloria (David) Franco and Irma Arreola; grandchildren: Jeremiah, Anthony, Alyssa and Eli; siblings: Ofelia, Eva, Amparo, Noemi, Ana, and JR as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Visit with his family and friends to honor and celebrate his life and view his life story film on Tuesday, September 2 from 6:00-8:00 at the Life Story Funeral Home, Plainwell; 120 Woodhams St. (685-5881). A homecoming celebration service will be held on Wednesday, September 3 at the Gun Lake Community Church; 12200 W M 179 Hwy, Wayland, MI 49348 (269 795-7903).
