A man of honor, unwavering strength, and unending courage, Thomas “Tim-Tom” Campbell was an inspiration to his family and friends. He was determined, especially when engaged in the fight for his life, and everything he did he did with all his heart. Tom was blessed to share much of his life with his true love, and together they experienced so many of the best things that life has to offer. In addition to the love he had for his family, he cherished his friends, too. With a life that spanned times of great change in the world around him, Tom created a priceless collection of memories that will remain a lasting treasure in the hearts of his family and friends.

As the 1930s drew to a close, WWII was escalating overseas. Although we remained uninvolved for a time, the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, left President Franklin D. Roosevelt with no choice but to declare war the following day. The years that followed were filled with rationing on common goods, manufacturing that was focused on supporting the war effort, and American families holding on to hope for the safe return of their loved one. It was just prior to this historic day in the Pacific Ocean that a young couple from Battle Creek, Michigan, was blessed with the birth of a healthy baby boy on June 2, 1941. Thomas was the youngest of three children born to his parents, Harvey and Alma May (Rollins) Campbell, as he was joined in his family by his brother, Dave, and his sister, Judy.

It was while at a foster home that Tom became known as Tim since there was already a young Tom living there. Many of his formative years were spent at the boys home on Oakland Drive where he was thrilled to meet back up with his brother, Dave. As a young man Tom served his country in the United States Marines.

Although he was from Battle Creek, Tom was in the Schoolcraft area one night to meet up with a girl for a date. Things looked a bit bleak when she changed her mind about the date, but life was forever changed for Tom when he ended up at a friend’s house where he met the young girl of his dreams. Her name was Nancy Arndt, and she was visiting at the same house that fateful night. Sparks flew right from the start, and the couple decided to go out on a date. The rest is history as they say. Soon after, the couple found themselves hopelessly in love. With a desire to establish a life together the sweethearts became husband and wife on January 8, 1966, just a few months before Nancy graduated from high school. One year later they welcomed their only child, Jodi, into their hearts and home.

To support his family, Tom worked at the Schoolcraft Fire Department, which is now known as South County, for over 28 years. He also worked as a custodian at the Schoolcraft schools for numerous years.

In his free time Tom was one to keep busy. Tom loved giving gifts that were just perfectly appropriate for the person he was giving it to, but as a general whole he was not a fan of the holidays. When it came to music he wasn’t too picky about what he listened to as he enjoyed all different musical genres, and it has been said that he collected nearly everything. Tom was amazing when it came to jigsaw puzzles as he could get them put together in no time. When he could he enjoyed trying his luck at the casino. Tom and Nancy did some traveling, and one of the most memorable trips was when they took everyone to Mackinac Island. He also made several trips to the Fireman’s Memorial in Roscommon. Saturday and Sunday mornings found Tom and his friend, Steve Hull, out for breakfast. Saturdays were spent at Yogi’s while Sundays were at Antique Kitchen. He and Steve also shared a love for auto racing and traveled all around together to catch various races. In addition to doing countless puzzles, Tom also liked putting any kind of models together. To relax he enjoyed watching old westerns and war movies.

Known as Tom, Tim, or even Tim-Tom, Thomas Campbell was an extraordinary man to know and love. He was a fighter who overcame numerous challenges from the beginning of his life until he drew his last breath. Tom was never one to let life get the best of him and was content in every day he was given. A loving husband and devoted father, there was nothing he treasured more than his family, and it was when surrounded by their love that he felt abundantly blessed. Loving, persistent, and even stubborn at times, Tom will be deeply missed.

Thomas “Tim-Tom” Campbell, of Schoolcraft, died on Sunday, August 24, 2014. Tom’s family includes his daughter: Jodi (fiancée Tim Manning) Campbell, of Schoolcraft; adopted daughter: Gail (Lance) Strome, of Schoolcraft; three grandchildren: Jonathon, Austin, Matthew Manning; sister: Judy (Tom) Bailey, of Howell; two sister-in-laws: Betty Burch, of Schoolcraft; Roberta (Wendell) Millard, of WI; brother-in-law: Robert Arndt, Jr., Schoolcraft; special nephew: Bob (Dawn) Arndt, of Vicksburg; best friend: Steve Hull, of Schoolcraft; and numerous nieces and nephews. Tom was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy, in 2009. The family will receive friends on Thursday, from 4-7 p.m., Life Story Funeral Home, 409 S. Main, Vicksburg (269-649-1697). The funeral service will be held on Friday, 1 p.m. at the same location. Burial will be at Schoolcraft Cemetery.

Please visit Tom’s webpage at www.lifestorynet.com where you can sign his guestbook and share a photo and/or memory. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to the South County Fire Authority and/or the family, (checks payable to Jodi Campbell).
