William “Bill” Howard Ubert was successful in his work and family life. His innovative solutions advanced his business and his love for his wife, children and grandchildren deeply enriched his life. Kind and big-hearted, Bill was quick to lend a hand to anyone in need. Encouraging and optimistic, his frequent response to almost anything was, “Sounds good to me.”

William Howard was born September 10, 1934 at a time when families were struggling to survive the Great Depression, which marked a generation that knew what it meant to sacrifice for family and country. The Lawrence and Alice (nee Clooney) Ubert family moved from dairyland Wisconsin to Alaska and back again, settling in Milwaukee to raise their four children: Mary, Bill, Bob and Tom.

After graduating from high school, Bill joined the US Marine Corp and served in Korea. During his tour of duty, he corresponded with the lovely Judy Borman. She not only wrote Bill faithfully, she also saved every letter he sent, each ending with, “See you in my dreams!” The dream came true for Bill when he returned from the war and married the love of his life.

Bill’s career as an electrical engineer was launched when he graduated from Milwaukee School of Engineering. The majority of his professional life was spent with Miller Brewing Company, where he travelled regularly to Georgia, New York, Colorado and California to help in the construction of bottling and canning plants. Notably, he designed a machine that was able to detect a painted label such that (for example) Corona bottles could not be returned in Miller cases. Being an avid biker, Bill also initiated the Miller Brewery Bike Club and rode regularly for the two-day “Best Dam Bike Tour,” a 150-mile bike trip to benefit the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

The good life of Bill and Judy was further enhanced by their four children: Jon, Therese, David and Monica. They grew up just outside of Milwaukee in Shorewood, Wisconsin, where Bill and Judy were active members of St. Roberts Parish and involved in many ministries.

For recreation, the family made a habit of gathering the Ubert clan at Eagle River on special holidays and for a full week every summer. In retirement, Bill and Judy also spent a week each winter at Sanibel Island. When their children married and had families of their own, Bill and Judy had the good fortune of returning to Eagle River with their grandchildren. In fact, they took every opportunity they could to spend time with these kids who filled their lives with pride and joy.

As a lifelong resident of Wisconsin, Bill was of course a Green Bay Packers fan. He liked music, especially Country Western, and was a member of the Hallelujah Singers at Alexian Village retirement community. The Village was Bill’s home during the years that he suffered from Alzheimers Disease. Living with the illness for over 11 years, Bill never lost his sense of humor. His positive spirit, generous heart and love of family are his lasting legacy.

William H. “Bill” Ubert passed away Wednesday, August 13, 2014 at the age of 79. Loving husband of the late Judy (nee Borman). Dear father of Jon (Jennifer) Ubert, Therese (Scott) Kwiatkowski, David (Lisa) Ubert, and Monica (Ross) Veitch. Proud grandfather of William, Isaac, Sara, and Gabriel Ubert; Kate and Lucy Kwiatkowski; Marina and Victoria Ubert; and Jonathan, Mariah, and Abby Downs. Further survived by other relatives and friends.

Visitation at Three Holy Women Parish – Holy Rosary Church, 2011 N. Oakland Ave. Monday, August. 18 from 11:00 AM until time of the Funeral Mass at 12:00 Noon. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Alzheimer’s Association, 6130 W. National Ave. Ste. 200, Milwaukee, WI 53214.
