Warren F. Herter, 76, formerly of Kankakee died at 12:10 A.M. Friday, July 25, 2014 in Auburn IL. Mr. Herter was a resident of the Auburn Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Warren was born in Springfield, Illinois, December 2, 1937, the son of Carl and Caroline (Markgref) Herter. He married Nancy J. Vance in Manteno, May 6, 1973.

Mr. Herter attended Lawrence Grade Scholl and was a graduate of Springfield high School, class of 1954. He received his X-Ray training from Memorial Hospital in Springfield. He worked at St. Francis Hospital in Taylorville and retired from the Illinois Department of Mental Health, having worked many years at facilities in Manteno and Tinley Park. He was an avid gardener and loved nature; particularly birding. Warren also enjoyed woodworking. He was a member of the Illinois Army National Guard and played clarinet in the Marching Band. Mr. Herter was a former member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Springfield and Wesley United Methodist Church in Bradley, Illinois.

Warren is survived by his son, Wade Allen Herter of Chicago and his sister, Carlene Dixon (Lloyd) of Springfield, his sister and brother -in-law; Carlene and Lloyd Dixon of Springfield and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his wife, Nancy, April 9, 2009 and his parents.

At Warren’s direction, there will be no visitation or funeral service. Graveside services will be held at Walnut Hill Cemetery, Williamsville, IL; Wednesday, July 30, 2014 at 11:30 a.m. Rev. Allen Miller from Sugar Creek Church will officiate.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or donor’s choice.
