Age 86, passed away at Rose Arbor on Thursday, July 24, 2014 with his family at his side. Dan was born in St. Stephens, AL, on November 13, 1927, the son of the late Henry and Ida (Lane) Thompson. He enlisted in the U.S. Army where he served in the 187th Glider Infantry as a Radio Operator. He was honorably discharged on September 17, 1947. After returning home he continued school and graduated from Murphy High School in 1948. Dan had a kind personality, welcoming smile, great sense of humor, and firm handshake. He spent his career working for the Procter and Gamble Company as a salesman for over 35 years. On March 30, 1991, he married Nancy Bare-Thompson who survives. Dan was a very active person who loved playing golf, was a member of States Golf Course where he shot a Hole-in-One on #4, was an excellent bowler who achieved a 300 Game, and was a sharp pool player. He also enjoyed dancing and a good night out with his family and friends. Dan was involved in many clubs and organizations including the VFW Red Arrow Post 1527 where he was a life member, the Celery City Moose # 2694, American Legion #475, and the Portage Eagles #3531. Above all, Dan loved his family and leaves them with many wonderful memories to cherish. He is also survived by his children, Daniel (Shari) Thompson, of Ft. Myer, FL, Peter (Debbie) Thompson, and Michael (Kristen) Bare; seven grandchildren, Kelsey and Caitlin Thompson, of FL, Samantha, Whitney, Tyler, John and Ryan Bare. He was also preceded in passing by a daughter, Patricia Thompson; a son, Timothy Bare, and five siblings. In accordance with his wishes, cremation will take place and a memorial celebration will be held on Thursday, July 31, 2014, from 2:00-6:00 PM, at the VFW Red Arrow Post 1527 off of Old Kilgore Rd. Memorials may be made to Hospice Care of S.W. Michigan, VFW Red Arrow Post 1527 or the Celery City Moose # 2694, c/o the funeral home.
