Life Story / Obituary

Edward Dale Kampen, age 83, of Holland, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Monday, July 7, 2014, after a short illness.

Ed was born in Zeeland on December 21, 1930 to Agnes and Albert Kampen, with a quick wit and mischievous nature, much to his parent’s vexation.

He served in the United States Army and in 1953 married his beloved wife, Ellalene (Dykhuis) Kampen.

They together raise five girls, where he may have been “outvoted”, but always had the loudest voice (or so he said). His grandchildren kept him smiling, put a twinkle in his eye, and renewed his energy for life. Ed was a member of Ebenezer Reformed Church.

Ed was preceded in death by his daughter, Karen (Kampen) Beyer in 2012.

He is survived by his wife, Ellalene of 60 years; daughters, Deb and Tom Wodarek of Ada, Kathryn Kampen of Holland, Susan and Chris Austin of Crystal Falls, and Kimberly and Dale Berends of Holland; son-in-law, Nick Beyer of Holland; very special grandchildren, Nicholas Beyer, Zachary Beyer, Mackenzie Beyer, Thatcher Berends, Samantha Austin, Catherine Austin, Thomas Wodarek, and Jeremy Wodarek.

It was not unheard that he would introduce himself to acquaintances of his sisters as their favorite brother. Sisters, Alma (deceased) and Peter Dryer of Clarkston, Delores Carter of Howell, and Beula and David Maris of Williamsburg, VA. He is also survived by aunt and fellow sports fan, Ruth Boerman, special sister-in-law, Gladys Dykhuis and many special nephews, nieces, and cousins.

Funeral services will be, 11 am, Saturday, July 12, at Ebenezer Reformed Church, 5166 Ottogan Street, with the Rev. Larry LePoire officiating.

Burial will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be 6-8 pm Friday, at the Dykstra Funeral Home-Mulder Chapel, 188 West 32nd Street and one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.

Memorial contributions may be made to Ebenezer Reformed Church Memorial Fund.
