The reputation of reliable, trustworthy service at Osgood Funeral Homes continues today with Stan Willis and Bridget Sirrine Willis and Angie Sirrine. You see, Angie is W.R. Osgood’s great granddaughter and Bridget Sirrine Willis is his great, great granddaughter. And the next generation is in the offing with four year old Georgia and her six year old brother Max. Family serving families—for five generations. It doesn’t get any better than this.
The year was 1899 when W.R. Osgood came to St. Johns. Furniture and Undertaking, that was his original line of business—as it was for all undertakers at the turn of the century. He quickly became known for adherence to good business practices and for pleasing the public, building a business second to none in the county. His son, Glenn W. Osgood, joined him in the business and together they continued to build their reliable, trustworthy reputation.
As their funeral work grew they decided to dispose of the furniture business. This led to the purchase of the George S. Corbit residence, a large brick home on a spacious lot at the head of Linden Ave. The home was well equipped and had ample space for a reception room, a large chapel, offices, and an embalming room, plus living quarters.
Then along came a young man, a local boy who grew up in St. Johns and worked in the fields around town. He participated in nearly all activities in high school, was well known and well liked. His name was Bob Sirrine. He noticed a lovely gal by the name of Dorothy Jean Osgood and at the age of thirteen escorted her to the movies. Bob met her father, of course, and early on gained an interest in his life’s work as a funeral director.
World War II came along, though, and Bob joined the Navy before pursuing his funeral career. When he earned his wings he came home to St. Johns to marry Dorothy Jean—it was August 13, 1944. The newlyweds moved cross-country to California as Bob finished out his service in the Navy.
After the war Bob and Dorothy Jean returned to Michigan and Bob joined Glenn Osgood in the family funeral business. Bob had found his calling. He and Dorothy raised their four children—John & Bill, Mary Pat & Angie—right along with the funeral business. Plus, over the years in the St. Johns community, Bob and Dorothy Jean found countless opportunities to make contributions to local service clubs, veteran’s organizations, and church activities.
