Hartman, John P.
of Lawton
Born in Muskegon on November 2, 1946 to Sophia (Oueverkerk) Hartman and the late Philip F. Hartman. He attended Muskegon High School; graduated from Western Michigan University with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology; a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity; also earned an M.A. in Counseling and an M.A. in Psychology from WMU. John was a Vietnam veteran, serving his country in the U.S. Army. He was an instructor of psychology at Southwestern Michigan College in Dowagiac, MI for 25 years. He is survived by his son Lane P. Hartman of Lawton, his former wife Jean Brush also of Lawton; his mother Sophia Hartman of Muskegon, sister Lieschen Hartman of Boulder, CO, and brother P. Fred Hartman of Portage. Also surviving are two nieces; Maria (Kurt) Olson and Tyler Brush of Waterford; and grandnieces Fiona and Lily Olson of Troy; nephews Joseph (Melissa) Allen of Chester Gap, VA, John Allen of Detroit, and Kale Brush of Waterford; and brother-in-laws James R. Allen of Fairhaven, and Geno Brush of Waterford; and many cousins, aunts and uncles. He was preceded by his father, and by his sister Christine H. Allen. John was an active surfer since high school, traveling to Florida, Mexico, Australia, California, and Hawaii to pursue the waves; his home base, however, was the “Unsalted” waves of Lake Michigan. A service to celebrate his life will be held Saturday 3:00 PM at The People’s Church in Kalamazoo.
